Back in September, I went with a group to a sinkhole and the Singing Sand Dunes here in Qatar. The sinkhole is not too far out-of-town but slightly hard to find if you aren’t with someone who has been before. You technically don’t need a 4×4 to get to it but the terrain is rough and cars with low clearance would probably have a hard time. I tried to find some official information about it but all I found were other people’s blogs about their visit. It seems to have a name of Musfer. Some people speculated that the sinkhole is actually part of a large cave network.
We arrived in the heat of the day and I was anxious to get into the sinkhole to cool off! The sinkhole entrance is surrounded by a chain link fence and a gate. I am assuming this is so people and camels don’t fall in at night. The mouth of the sinkhole is not very wide and you don’t realize how steep the descent is until you get in. Did I mention, I am afraid of heights?!! It didn’t bother me as much as I thought it would. Climbing down was hard especially since I had my big camera with me. The view from the bottom was totally worth it though! The climb back up was brutal and my thighs hurt for days after! I recommend taking a bottle of water down with you for the climb out.
Then we headed to the Singing Sand Dunes. It is really one huge dune! It was so high that my climb out of the sinkhole and my fear of heights prevented me from climbing to the top of the dune. It didn’t matter though. When people started sliding down the dune, I could hear the low humming the dune makes. The more people or cars went down it, the louder it got. It was amazing! I shot video of it but it was really windy and don’t think you can hear it. Next time, I getting someone to drive me to the top! I can’t wait to go again.
