Eating My Way Through Paris

June 29, 2015

I was hoping to write about all the great restaurants that I ate at in Paris. Unfortunately, each place only really did well in some areas and failed in others. So instead, I am going to tell you what food I did and didn’t like.

First off they seem to do smoked salmon really well. Not that I had ever had it before! It never looked appealing to me. However, I accidentally ordered it on my first night in Paris at my hotel.  The picture above is what I got and it was amazing! If it hadn’t been so expensive, I would have ordered another! This was on a bed of some kind of soft bread with a chive cream cheese spread between.  It literally melted in my mouth. I am now hooked on smoked salmon.

Meat! They love it! I hardly saw chicken on the menu. While I enjoy meat, I don’t like to eat it very often. I found this to be a huge challenge. One night, I sat down and ordered the plat du jour, which is usually the chef’s choice. Little did I know I was getting veal! I usually don’t eat veal. However, it was too late. It was okay. The best part about it was the bed of cous cous it was sitting on and the olives. As you can see it looked great! IMG_2784

Another night of meat! Although it was started off with another round of smoked salmon on top of a cabbage salad. I was on a tour for a part of my trip and the menu was set at this place, otherwise I wouldn’t have ordered meat.  Since there was no menu, I don’t know much about this except that it is marinated for hours in wine. Might have been beef bourguignon. This was better than the veal. The meat was really tender. I did not enjoy the fact that the meat was served with all the fat still attached. I kept having to eat around it. Overall, I enjoyed this meal!

Of course, wine! The French are known for their wine. This one pictured, Tradition by Les Vignerons de Buzet, was really great and not too expensive. It was suggested by our tour guide and was only 14€. It was smooth and not too strong of a red. We didn’t know it at the time, but the winery uses no chemical fertilizers on their vines. All the French wine I tried was great. I really got to like Cotes du Rhone region wine the best. Even the cheap bottles were good!

This was by far the best thing I ate, although it wasn’t in Paris. It was in Giverny. The restaurant called it a Summer Freshness in Feta Cheese Salad. One layer was tomatoes, spices and sauce and the next layer was feta cheese with chives. I am really not sure what the pink stuff was on top and it didn’t have much flavor. May have just been for looks.  The taste was indescribable, but exactly as described as it was light and refreshing! I wanted them to bring me more, but I knew I had two more courses coming.

IMG_2808

Fish is what I kept ordering in place of meat. I was disappointed twice and stopped ordering it. The fish was usually flavorless and the sides were also plain. The fish above looked so good, but had no taste and was really expensive! The night I had the Summer Freshness salad, I had ordered salmon and it was also very plain. I would say cooked fish is not something they do well in France. Stick to the smoked salmon!

IMG_2817One afternoon I passed by a Mexican food restaurant and I thought, as a Texan, it is my duty to try it. Had to be better than what we have in Doha. The menu had very authentic things on it like enchiladas and tacos. There were a few people inside, so it couldn’t be that bad. They brought chips and salsa which was a good sign. The salsa tasted homemade. I ordered the pork taco. Instead of several small tacos, I got one large taco. The pork was almost bbq pork, but it tasted really good. However, the taco was too big to pick up and eat. The star of the dish was the peach “salsa” they served on the side. It was more like a salad though. It was peaches, jalapenos, cilantro and spices mixed together. Another thing I wanted more of, in fact, I saved it to finish after the taco.

IMG_2832Sometimes after over a week of rich food, you just want something normal to you to eat. I googled my way to a cheeseburger. While it wasn’t bad, it was served on an English muffin! The fries were actually pretty good too.  I had also decided I didn’t want to pay 20€ for a burger, so I found my way to a chain that was decked out American Diner style with pink and blue chairs and booths with oldies playing in the background.  It didn’t matter cause it hit the spot.

A few tips about eating out in Paris. Ask for tap water or a carafe or they might bring you expensive bottled water. Coffee is cheaper ordered at the bar of a restaurant and drunk standing up. You will have to ask for the check, as the French are never rushed to eat a meal! Bon appetit!

My Favorite Things In Fort Worth, Texas

Favorite Things About Fort Worth

The last place I lived in Texas was Fort Worth. It is about 35 miles west of Dallas. Not in a million years did I ever think I would end up living in Fort Worth after growing up outside of Dallas. Fort Worth was the place for cowboys, rodeo’s and Billy Bob’s. And definitely not a city girl who loved living in New York City for seven years.  However, I got a job there and fell in love with Fort Worth. Recently, I went back for a conference, and it reminded me of all my favorite places there. I thought I would share them with you in case you are visiting or maybe to entice you to visit.

The food! Fort Worth has some amazing food venues.  From holes in the walls to food trucks to fine dining, Fort Worth has it all. The sign pictured above is the sign above my favorite place for a great breakfast, the Montgomery Street Cafe. It serves country home style and cooking. I usually get egg, hashbrowns, bacon and biscuits and gravy. You can sit either at a table or the old-fashioned countertop. The waitresses are the most friendly people you will find anywhere. It is a small place, so you might have to wait outside for a few minutes while the tables open up and get cleaned, but it is worth the wait.  Montgomery Street Cafe is also open for lunch and usually has a homemade dessert to finish it off with, but get there early because once they are out of dessert, it’s gone for the day!

If you are looking for Tex-mex/Mexican, then I suggest several places in town. First is El Asadero Mexican Steakhouse. Another small restaurant, but excellent food. I usually get the Enchiladas Suizas, but my friends who are fans of mole sauce say this is the place! Next, if you want to true Fort Worth experience, then head down the street to Joe T. Garcias. It is a bit of a tourist attraction but is worth going to sit outside in their beautiful garden. At lunch, they only serve enchilada’s and fajitas. The portion size of fajitas is enough for two very hungry people! Make sure to bring cash as they don’t take credit cards. There is an ATM inside, though. Next, is Salsa Limon for Mexican street tacos. They have two permanent locations, but they also have a food truck that moves around the city. Excellent street tacos and I recommend the Pastor or the Chorizo. Of course, there are many more Mexican places to eat in Fort Worth, and I encourage you to explore them all and see which ones strike your fancy.

Fort Worth also has a Food Truck Park! They have all kinds of trucks on a daily basis and is open for lunch. You can check their website for the truck schedule. Sometimes Salsa Limon is there as well.  Since I haven’t lived there for almost two years, I am not familiar with their line up of trucks, but I have never been disappointed. Some nights they also have live music.  Another great place for live music is Fred’s Texas Cafe. The one I like to go to is the original on Currie Street. It is mostly outdoor seating, but with a roof. The burgers are amazing, but the best thing is the Crispy Bacon Cheese Fries! They are to die for! Ask them to put blue cheese on them and you will be addicted, although suffering high cholesterol.

Beer is also an important part of your experience in Fort Worth. Fort Worth has their own brewery called Rahr. On Wednesday nights and Saturday afternoons you can take a tour of the brewery for $10. With that comes a pint glass and three pints of beer! They also usually have food trucks out back, and you can spend the afternoon there eating and drinking. This is also another venue for live music in Fort Worth. My other favorite place for beer in Fort Worth is The Ginger Man. There is a Dallas location, but this is the one I know and love. I spent many an after work happy hour at this bar. They have an amazing selection of beer, and much of it is on tap. They also have many local breweries represented. The food is better than your average pub fair as well. When the weather isn’t too hot, I suggest sitting outside in the garden. Also another place for live local music! See a theme here? I like food, beer, and live music!

Not to be forgotten are the great cultural attractions in Fort Worth. Fort Worth has five museums within walking distance of each other in the cultural district. There are three art museums, the Amon Carter Museum, which features American Art with a heavy western slant, the Kimball Art Museum, which just underwent a major expansion and the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth. Down the street is the National Cowgirl Museum and the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History. I used to work at the Science and History museum, and it is a great place for kids, and they have an Imax theater! Nestled in all of these is the Will Rogers Memorial Center, which is home to the Fort Worth Stock Show and rodeo that is held in February every year.  The stock show has been going since 1896. You can go to the fairgrounds for rides, eat great BBQ and see animals auctioned off.  Every day there is, at least, one rodeo show. However, get your tickets early as they sell out fast! In years past admission to the Stock Show also got you into the Science and History Museum, so plan accordingly.

Well, I could go on about Forth Worth forever, but will leave you to explore more on your own. Drop me a line if you have a specific question.  I would be happy to offer some recommendations based your tastes including a vegan option and coffee shops!

Bahrain

I had no expectation of food in Bahrain, except that the original Ric’s Kountry Kitchen is there. Ric’s is an American Style Diner in Doha, which I tend to frequent on Friday mornings for Texas-style French toast and fake sausage. It feels like home in there. Needless to say, I wanted to go to the original one. Not only because it’s the original, but because they have real sausage and bacon! Yes, Bahrain has pork in restaurants. I ordered my usual, The Rig. The Rig is two eggs any style with Texas French Toast and two sausage patties.  Plus I got a half order of the biscuits and sausage gravy. Yes, my cholesterol probably went through the roof as I ate it all. Real sausage just doesn’t compare to the fake stuff we get here. I was in heaven.  So much so we went both Friday and Saturday morning. They also serve beer! Ric’s in Bahrain was great although the coffee was just as bad as in Doha. But if you want an authentic American breakfast Ric’s is the place to go!

Bahrain

People kept telling me there was good Mexican food in Bahrain. As a Texan, my ears perked up and I was on a mission to find it.  Two people had recommended Señor Pacos. My friend and I agreed that we needed to go. My friend that lives there picked us up and had invited a few of her friends. The decor was definitely Mexican. There was Mexican tile all over. I failed to get pictures as all I could think about was food.  I ordered the Enchiladas Suizas, which is sour cream and green sauce with chicken inside.  My friend and I split a pitcher of Margaritas. This was the best Mexican I have had in the Middle East. Also, there was a terrible cover band, but we danced anyway and had a great blast!

The party then moved to a great bar called, JJ’s Restaurant. Not much of a restaurant that I could see, but great dj. There was a small dance floor that we spend several hours on. For someone not living in the Middle East, this is just your basic bar. But we have nothing like this in Doha. We didn’t want to leave. My feet were killing me by the end of the night and that is always a sign of a good time.  We also went to a bar called Dublin’s the night before. Not great, but okay if you are nearby, but I wouldn’t seek it out. Also, avoid Match Point. Can’t say why but just take my word for it.

I really enjoyed my time in Bahrain and am already planning to return! Where have you been lately that surprised you?

Food of Ireland

One of the most shocking things for me about Ireland, was the food.  I am not a foodie. I do enjoy good food, but I don’t plan vacations around food. I do try to use Urban Spoon or Yelp to help me find good food.  What I didn’t expect to find was the amazing food in Ireland.  Above is a boxty. The boxty is the pancake looking thing.  In this case it was a sage boxty served with pulled pork! This Texan living in a mostly pork free country was impressed.  It is a different flavor of pulled pork but very good especially when wrapped up by the sage boxty.  It was also very filling.  This was from a place called Gallagher’s Boxty House in Temple Bar. I was actually sad it was my last night in Dublin because I would have like to go back and had a different type.

I was looking for a traditional Irish breakfast place on Yelp when I discovered the Queen of Tarts. I didn’t get the traditional Irish breakfast I was looking for, but that was ok.  I ordered a delicious scone and eggs.  Granted it was way too much food for one person, but I needed to try it all.  I ate slow and went for a very long walk afterwards.

Food of Ireland

The one thing that I wished now that I had taken a picture of was the fish and chips I had in Tramore.  It was a whole fish on a bed of french fries. We Americans are doing it wrong. Fish isn’t fish sticks with french fries. It is a whole greasy fish served on thick french fries, which I have determined is where the term chips comes from.

In Dublin, my friend took me to this place called 101 Talbot. I had a special, so I can’t remember what it was called.  It was a chicken dish. It was excellent and the portions were large!

Next time I find excellent food, I promise to take more pictures!
