Hi, everyone! This week is proving to be much quieter after all the turkey and rain. It was the last week of classes where I work and the students are looking exhausted and as ready for the break as I am. Although, I am just ready to go home for Christmas and see my family. Because I live 8,000 miles away, I don’t see them very often. This year was the exception as I saw my parents and my oldest niece in Paris! This makes the time I spend with them very precious and I usually spend the two weeks at home just hanging out at the house with them as much as possible. What will you be doing for the Christmas holiday, if you celebrate?

Airline News

FAA Downgrades Thailand Over Aviation Concerns – Thailand has been downgraded to Category 2. This is not one airline, but all the country’s airline. While I wouldn’t cancel my trip to Thailand based on this, you might consider looking at which Thai airline you may fly with and check their safety record. Always make an informed decision.

11 Secrets Cabin Crew Won’t Tell You – Some of these are actually useful to know, especially the part about water on the plane. It really makes me not want to take coffee or tea on a plane, but no coffee for 15 and half hours on my next flight sounds like torture. Chemicals here I come!

Hotel News

What Hotels Won’t Tell You – Continuing with the theme of things we may not want to know and again it has to do with coffee. Basically, it comes down to you have no idea what someone has done with that coffee maker before you arrive and given the lack of cleaning of the glassware in the room, it is safe to say the coffee maker isn’t that clean either.

Destination News

Living in: The World’s Greatest Walled Cities – Walled cities fascinate me. I wonder how they operated and what happened if you got stuck outside the walls if they closed the gates. BBC Travel brings us five UNESCO World Heritage Sites from all over the globe to explore what living in a walled city is all about.

17 Star Wars’ Locations that Actually Exist – Let’s face it, any Star Wars fan would love to visit the fantastical places you see in Star Wars and CNN brings us the actual film locations for many of the scenes from several of the movies. Three are in the U.S. and one is close to me in Abu Dhabi, there is even one location in Italy. You could see a lot of countries just following this list.

Friday Favorites

Friday FavoritesThe great turkey hunt came to a great end this week. I got a call on Monday saying my turkey would be ready to be picked up on Wednesday. However, mother nature had other ideas. Tuesday brought a good amount of rain to Qatar, but Wednesday brought a downpour of rain. Many schools were closed. This is because Qatar has no drainage system in place. Mostly because it hardly ever rains and usually not for very long. Because of this the roads were heavily flooded and the airport experienced some flooding as well. Eventually, I got the call on Wednesday night saying the turkeys were at the store! I have my turkey! I hope you all had a Happy Thanksgiving!

Museum ‘Bans’ Cameras – The Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam would like people to appreciate the art instead of photographing it and asks people to sketch it instead. Cameras aren’t entirely banned.

These Hotels Take Their Coffee Seriously – If you take your coffee seriously and are frequently disappointed, like me, with hotel coffee you will want to check out these hotels.

Caribbean Resorts where the rooms have their own pools – Who doesn’t want to go to the Caribbean and have a room with its own pool? These look so cool.

Airline News

The Airline Reimagined – Some are calling this the Uber of airlines. Ideas like giving you perks for sitting in the middle seat and having cinema seating areas may change the way we fly. This article from CNN shows us what the future of airlines could be and it looks great!

Gifts for Travelers

Do you have a traveler on your gift list this year? If you do, I have rounded up some of the great things I have found to give them this year. In addition, I also have a giveaway for you today, so make sure to read all the way through to read the details to enter the giveaway!

International USB Travel Adapter

Gifts for Travelers

I have one of these, and I love it. The one I have though is out of stock. This is the same brand. Most of the electronics I bring on trips are dual voltage, and I don’t need a converter. This allows your traveler to carry only on adaptor for all their USB adaptors.

1000 Places to See Before you Die

Gifts for Travelers

This is a must have for any traveler or travel dreamer in your life! It is the ultimate bucket list of places to go. What is really great, is that it gives you many places to see in each country and city. This means you also get a mini travel guide.

Travel Scarf with Hidden Zippered Pocket

Gifts for Travelers

No traveler can be too careful about carrying their valuables around while traveling. This infinity scarf has a hidden zippered compartment to make that possible. This scarf was designed by a fellow travel blogger, so you know it is well designed for its purpose. It is available in many fabrics of different weights and styles. There is even a neutral color if your male traveler would be interested.

Travel Seat Cushion
Any traveler who has to sit in economy class for more than a few hours will appreciate this self-inflating seat cushion. In fact, I just ordered myself one for my flight home for Christmas.

Travel Humidifier Great for any traveler with allergy issues or if they are traveling to a dry climate. I have really bad allergies and asthma and when I travel to dry places or hotels with forced heat, this has saved me from getting sick. You attach it to a bottle of water and plug it into your USB adaptor (see the first gift) and it will put out a fine mist for about 8 hours. I put it right beside the bed. It works best with an Evian bottle and I just refill the bottle out of the tap. It does have a small blue glow, which makes a nice night light.

Power Bank

If your traveler takes lots of photos for Instagram or uses Google Maps to navigate while traveling, then they need this rechargeable power bank. I have one similar to this and I love that if fits in my pocket and does not weigh much. Great for at the end of the day when you are headed back to your hotel and you have 5% battery left on your phone and your are lost!

Happy Friday, everyone! This week has been the week of the great turkey hunt, as I have promised to bring the turkey this year. Not an actual hunt obviously, but getting a turkey for Thanksgiving has proven tough.  All this week on Doha Foodies, a local Facebook group, there has been a discussion about where to find turkeys and why can’t we find any. On Wednesday, I headed to a grocery store near my office as I had heard they had turkeys, well, frozen turkeys. I go straight to the frozen section and see no turkeys. I lap the frozen section twice and finally, I decide to ask a clerk, and the she goes to ask her coworker and he says no turkeys, but the lady doesn’t seem to like his answer. More discussion ensues, in Tagalog, about the turkeys. Then she says, we have breast, ma’am. I say no, I want a whole turkey. She then goes back to the man and asks if we can special order some. He again said no. I am sure I looked disappointed because they lady apologized and then said, maybe next month for Christmas. I then had to explain that American Thanksgiving was next week, and you could see the realization of why I was asking hit her. The next store I also tried had been rumored to have turkeys had none, and the people were less enthusiastic about helping me find a turkey. The last store I went to said I could reserve a fresh turkey, but that it wouldn’t arrive till Thanksgiving day! Not the end of the world since my Thanksgiving is Friday. Let’s see if I actually get a turkey. My backup plan is to buy a frozen turkey breast and cross my fingers that I get my fresh turkey. Stay tuned for turkey hunt update next week!

Flying News

9 Jet Lag Remedies to Try – Conde Nast Traveler brings us nine jet lag “cures.” I am always wary of chemicals to cure jet lag, but there are some on here that are light related that look interesting. Might be worth checking out if you are flying through several times zones, like me, this holiday season.

Hotel News

The Smallest Hotel Rooms – Personally, I am too claustrophobic to stay in a few of these, but not all of them look tiny. These are great if you aren’t planning on staying for very long or if you don’t spend lots of time in your hotel room while traveling. I looked at the rates for the Pod Hotel in New York City and for a pod with a private bathroom the lowest rate was $89 a night, which is an amazing rate in Manhattan. This was after the holiday season, of course.

Marriott and Starwood Merger – Marriott announced this week that it would be acquiring Starwood Properties. This is an update on how that is going to affect their individual hotel reward programs. Even in you don’t have rewards points with them, it is good to be aware of this when making future reservations at either brand.

Destination News

Which Signature Drink to Order Based on Where you Are Traveling – A great list of 40 drinks to try in 40 different countries. In Goa, we discovered that alcohol made from cashew nuts was the specialty, called Feni.

36 Hours in Montreal – The New York Times brings us a quick itinerary for a weekend getaway to Montreal. I really want to go to the Biodome, which is a tropical rainforest located in chilly Montreal.

Weekly Post Wrap-Up

Thai Silk Weaving – After leaving the Jim Thompson House, we walked to some traditional Thai silk weavers’ stores to watch the dying and weaving of silk.

Reader Survey – Yes, this was actually last week. However, you only have a few more days to fill out the survey to tell me what you want to read on the blog! This really helps me to bring you content you want to read, and it only takes a few minutes. I would appreciate it. Thanks!
